  • Dates: My favorite way to add natural sweetness while helping to bind all the ingredients together.
  • Rolled oats: Adds fiber, texture, and makes these energy balls filling and satisfying.
  • Carrots: Brings moisture, natural sweetness, and all those carrot cake vibes (plus vitamins!).
  • Almond butter: Acts as a binder while adding healthy fats and protein to keep you fuller longer.
  • Walnuts: Provides that classic carrot cake crunch, omega-3s, and helps stabilize blood sugar.
  • Shredded coconut: Adds texture, natural sweetness, and a yummy twist.
  • Ground flaxseed: Adds fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg): Creates that authentic carrot cake flavor profile.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances all the other flavors and adds warmth.
  • Biscoff cookies: Adds the distinctive caramelized spice cookie flavor.
  • Protein powder: Makes them more filling. I like to use hemp protein powder but you can use any. Hemp is great because it also adds a complete amino acid profile, essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and a gentle nutty flavor that complements the carrot cake spices.

What Are Biscoff Protein Balls?

Biscoff protein balls are a no-bake snack made with protein powder, oats, dates, nut butter, and crushed Biscoff cookies. They’re designed to deliver the flavour of Biscoff cookies in a more filling snack that’s easy to prep ahead.

My version combines classic carrot cake ingredients like shredded carrots, cinnamon, ginger, and walnuts with Biscoff cookies for a snack that tastes a little like carrot cake and cookie butter rolled into one.

Because they’re made with dates and oats, they hold together without needing to be baked, making them perfect for lunch boxes, after-school snacks, or pre-sport fuel.

Trish’s Tips for the Best Energy Balls

  • Don’t overprocess the mixture – you want to maintain some texture from the oats and carrots.
  • Wet your hands slightly when rolling the balls to prevent sticking.
  • For the best flavor, let these sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour before enjoying. These energy balls actually taste better after the flavors meld in the refrigerator overnight, making them perfect for meal prep Sunday!
  • Pre-grate your carrots and crush your Biscoff cookies ahead of time to make assembly even quicker.
  • Double the recipe and freeze half for quick snacks anytime – they thaw in about 20-30 minutes at room temperature.
  • Make it gluten-free: Use gluten-free oats and substitute the Biscoff cookies with gluten-free gingersnaps.
  • Nut-free option: Replace almond butter with sunflower seed butter and omit walnuts.

Serving Suggestions

  • Straight from the freezer on busy mornings

Frequently Asked Questions

Are energy balls good for you?

Yes! These energy balls are packed with nutritious ingredients like oats (fiber), carrots (vitamins), dates (natural energy), nuts (protein and healthy fats), and flaxseed (omega-3s). They’re much healthier than processed snacks or candy bars. The added Biscoff cookies make them taste indulgent while still keeping the overall treat balanced and nutritious.

How many energy balls can you eat a day?

Most people find 1-2 energy balls is the perfect snack serving. They’re nutrient-dense, which means they’re satisfying despite their small size. If you’re using them as a pre-workout snack, 1-2 is perfect. For a more substantial snack or light meal replacement, 2-3 energy balls would be appropriate. Listen to your body and hunger cues!

What is a carrot cake protein ball?

A carrot cake protein ball (or energy ball) is a no-bake, bite-sized snack that captures all the flavors of carrot cake in a convenient, healthier format. Unlike traditional carrot cake balls that might be made with cake and frosting, these energy/protein balls use whole food ingredients like dates, carrots, oats, and spices to create that carrot cake flavor without all the refined sugar and flour.

Is carrot cake healthy or unhealthy?

Traditional carrot cake, while containing some healthy ingredients like carrots and sometimes nuts, is typically high in refined sugar, oil, and often topped with cream cheese frosting, making it more of a dessert than a health food. These Carrot Cake Biscoff Energy Balls, however, capture the flavors of carrot cake in a much healthier way, using whole food ingredients, natural sweeteners, and significantly less sugar than traditional carrot cake.

How long do energy balls last?

When stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, these energy balls will last up to 7 days. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months! Just thaw in the refrigerator overnight when you’re ready to enjoy them.

Can I make these energy balls nut-free?

Absolutely! Simply substitute the almond butter with sunflower seed butter and replace the walnuts with sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds for a completely nut-free version that’s still delicious and nutritious.

Do I need to refrigerate these energy balls?

Yes, since these energy balls contain fresh carrots and the optional icing contains dairy, they should be refrigerated. The cold temperature also helps them firm up and maintain their shape.

Can I use a different protein powder?

Definitely! While hemp protein works well with the earthy flavors in these energy balls, you can substitute any protein powder you have on hand.

Can I make Biscoff protein balls without protein powder?

Yes. Simply replace the protein powder with additional oats or ground flaxseed. The texture will remain similar, although the protein content will be lower.

Can I freeze Biscoff energy balls?

Yes – I love making these and freezing them for easy grab-and-go healthy snacks. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months and thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
